About griha pravesh invitations
A griha pravesh invitation has one requirement no other card does: the address is new to everybody receiving it. That makes the address the most important thing on the invitation, and it should be written out in full, with the landmark or the society name that people will actually navigate by rather than just a plot number.
The ceremony itself usually opens with a vastu shanti or griha shanti puja at a muhurat set by the family priest, followed by a havan and then lunch. Guests arriving after the puja has started is the standard failure mode, so the start time deserves prominence alongside the address.
Where the family is holding a small puja for relatives in the morning and a larger gathering in the evening, those are two cards with two times.
What to put on the invitation
- The new address
- In full, with the society name and a landmark. This is the point of the card.
- Puja start time
- Tied to a muhurat; guests should be present for it.
- The programme
- Vastu shanti, havan, lunch — with their own times if they differ.
- Contact number
- Someone to call when a guest cannot find the building.
Griha Pravesh invitation questions
- What is griha pravesh?
- The ceremony marking the first formal entry into a new home, performed at an auspicious time and usually comprising a vastu shanti puja, a havan and a meal. Families commonly avoid certain months and choose the date with a priest.
- What should a griha pravesh invitation include?
- The new address in full, the puja start time, who is hosting, and a contact number. The address matters more here than on any other invitation because no guest has been there before.
- How far ahead should it go out?
- One to two weeks. Griha pravesh dates are often fixed at short notice once possession and the muhurat align, and guests are usually local.
