About mundan invitations

The mundan or chudakarana is the ritual first tonsure, usually performed in the first, third or fifth year and very often at a family temple rather than at home. Because the venue is frequently a temple some distance away, the invitation carries more travel detail than most: the temple’s name, the town, and a start time tied to the muhurat.

Families observe this one differently — some hold a small ritual with only grandparents present, others follow it with a lunch for the whole extended family. The invitation should make clear which it is, since guests who arrive expecting a meal that is not happening remember it.

Where the mundan is combined with a naming ceremony or an annaprashan, both appear as separate cards in the film.

The temple or venue
With the town — mundan venues are often outside the home city.
Muhurat time
The ritual starts at a set time; guests should not arrive after it.
Whether lunch follows
Say so plainly; it determines who travels.

Mundan invitation questions

At what age is the mundan ceremony performed?
Most commonly in the first, third or fifth year, avoiding even years in many traditions. The exact date is usually set by the family priest, and many families tie it to a visit to a particular temple.
Is mundan the same as chudakarana?
Yes — chudakarana is the Sanskrit name for the same samskara, and choula, mundan and keshanta are regional names for it. Use whichever word your family uses; the invitation takes your wording.
How much notice should the invitation give?
Three to four weeks where relatives are travelling to a temple town, and a fortnight for a ceremony at home.
