About reception invitations
The reception is usually the most formal function and the one with the longest guest list: colleagues, neighbours, extended family and everyone who could not be accommodated at the ceremony. The invitation should be correspondingly restrained — the couple’s full names, the hosting family, a clear time, and a venue address that a driver can use.
Where the reception is hosted by the groom’s family after a wedding at the bride’s, the host line changes accordingly and is worth getting right; guests read it as a statement of who is welcoming them.
Receptions run to a schedule in a way other functions do not. If there is a stage timing, a cake, or a dinner service that starts at a fixed hour, the invitation is where to say so.
What to put on the invitation
- Full names
- The reception card is the formal one — full names, not nicknames.
- The hosting family
- Often the groom’s side; the host line should name them.
- Venue address
- Complete enough to navigate to, including the city.
- Dress code
- Formal, black tie or Indian formal — receptions are where dress codes get followed.

In your language
The headings are set in the language, not transliterated — so the film reads as a card rather than as an English layout with translated text dropped in.
Reception invitation questions
- Who hosts the wedding reception?
- Conventionally the groom’s family hosts a reception after a wedding held by the bride’s family, though many couples now host jointly or hold receptions in two cities for two sets of guests.
- Can I send a reception invitation to a different list?
- Yes, and it is common. Because the reception list is usually the broadest, many families send a reception-only film to colleagues and acquaintances and the full multi-event film to relatives.
- How formal should the wording be?
- "Request the pleasure of your company" is the standard register for a reception. Save the informal wording for the mehendi and sangeet.
