About engagement invitations
The engagement is the first function the families host jointly, and the invitation reflects that: both surnames, both sets of parents, and a tone that is warmer and less formal than the wedding card. Depending on the region and community it may be called a roka, a sagai, a mangni, a nishchayam or simply the ring ceremony, and the designs here let you name the function whatever your family calls it.
Where the roka and the ring ceremony happen on the same day, they usually appear as two cards in the film — the roka in the morning at a family home, the ring ceremony in the evening at a venue. Where the engagement is a single event, one card is plenty.
These films are also the first outing for a wedding hashtag, if you are using one, and the first chance for guests to see the couple together.
What to put on the invitation
- Both families
- Parents’ names on both sides — the engagement is hosted jointly.
- What the function is called
- Roka, sagai, mangni, nishchayam or ring ceremony, in your family’s words.
- Date, time and venue
- One card per function if the roka and ring ceremony are separate.
- Dress code
- Pastels are conventional for engagements; say so if it matters.

In your language
The headings are set in the language, not transliterated — so the film reads as a card rather than as an English layout with translated text dropped in.
Engagement invitation questions
- What is the difference between a roka and an engagement?
- A roka is the smaller, earlier ceremony where the two families formally agree to the match, often at home and with close family only. The engagement or ring ceremony is the public function with rings exchanged. Many families hold both, sometimes on the same day.
- Should the wedding date be on the engagement invitation?
- Only if it is fixed. If it is, a line such as "Wedding to follow in November 2026" is a graceful way to include it without turning the engagement card into a wedding card.
- Can we use the same design for the wedding later?
- Yes. Each order is a separate film, so you can keep the same palette and typography across the engagement, the save-the-date and the wedding for a consistent look.
