Engagement and roka invitation wording
Warmer than a wedding card, and jointly hosted — the wording should show both.
The engagement is the first function the two families host together, and the wording carries that: both surnames appear, both sets of parents are named, and the register is a step less formal than the wedding invitation.
Whether you call it a roka, a sagai, a mangni, a nishchayam or a ring ceremony, use your family’s own word. An invitation that uses unfamiliar vocabulary to sound formal reads as borrowed.

Getting it right
- Name both families — the engagement is hosted jointly and the card should look it.
- If the roka and ring ceremony are on the same day, list them as two entries with two times.
- Mention the wedding date only if it is actually fixed.
- Pastel dress codes are conventional; say so if you have one.
Questions
- What should an engagement invitation say?
- Both families’ names, the couple’s names, what the function is called in your family, the date, time and venue, and a dress code if there is one.
- Is roka wording different from engagement wording?
- Slightly. A roka is smaller and usually at home, so the wording is warmer and the guest list is close family. An engagement or ring ceremony card is more formal and goes to a wider list.
- Should the wedding date be on the engagement card?
- Only if it is confirmed. "Wedding to follow in November 2026" is a graceful way to include it without turning the card into a wedding invitation.
