About save the date invitations
A save-the-date does one job: get the date into someone’s diary months before the formal card arrives. That means it should be short, it should be unmistakable about the date, and it should be forwardable without explanation. Fifteen to thirty seconds is the right length.
Because it travels before the full programme is fixed, a save-the-date deliberately leaves things out. No venue if the venue is not booked, no ceremony list if the functions are still moving. The date, the two names, and a line telling people the invitation will follow is a complete save-the-date.
The countdown format works especially well here — "180 days to go" over your own photographs — because it gives people a reason to watch a second time as the wedding gets closer.
What to put on the invitation
- Both names
- Usually first names only at this stage; the formal card carries the full names.
- The date
- Large and unambiguous. If only the month is fixed, say the month.
- The city
- Enough for guests to start thinking about travel, even without a venue.
- A hashtag
- If you are using one, this is where it gets introduced.
In your language
The headings are set in the language, not transliterated — so the film reads as a card rather than as an English layout with translated text dropped in.
Save the Date invitation questions
- When should a save-the-date go out?
- Four to eight months before the wedding, and earlier for a destination wedding or if many guests are travelling internationally. The formal invitation follows four to six weeks before.
- Do I need the venue on a save-the-date?
- No. The city is enough. Leaving the venue off is normal and avoids having to send a correction if the booking changes.
- Can I use a save-the-date and a full invitation?
- Yes, and most families do. They are separate orders, so you can pick a short design now and a longer multi-event film once the programme is settled.
