Birthday invitation wording
First birthdays, children’s parties and sixtieths — three different cards.
Birthday invitations succeed or fail on logistics. For a children’s party the end time matters as much as the start time, because parents plan the rest of the day around it, and a line about whether they are expected to stay prevents a good deal of confusion.
Milestone birthdays — a first, a sixtieth, a shashtipoorthi — often include a puja before the party, and that belongs on the card with its own time.

Getting it right
- Give a start and an end time for children’s parties. Parents need both.
- Say whether parents should stay.
- Put the age on the card — it is the headline for a first, a sixteenth or a sixtieth.
- If you would rather not have gifts, say so warmly rather than formally.
Questions
- What should a birthday invitation include?
- Whose birthday and which one, the date, start and end times, the full address, and an RSVP contact for the headcount.
- How do you write "no gifts" politely?
- "Your blessings are the only gift we need" is the conventional Indian phrasing and reads warmly. For children’s parties, "no gifts please, just come and play" works.
- How far ahead should a birthday invitation go out?
- Two to three weeks for a party with a guest list, and a month for a first birthday with relatives travelling.
