Naming ceremony invitation wording

The card that announces a name for the first time — give the name the room it deserves.

A naming ceremony invitation does something no other invitation does: it tells most of the guest list what the baby is called. That announcement is the card, and everything else on it is supporting detail.

Grandparents are conventionally named on namkaran invitations alongside the parents, and many families use the card to thank the people who helped through the first weeks.

Getting it right

  • Give the name the largest type on the card. It is why the card exists.
  • Name the grandparents — it is conventional and it is noticed.
  • List the puja time and the meal time separately if they differ.
  • A photograph is optional, and many families leave it off a card that will be forwarded widely.

Questions

What do you write on a naming ceremony invitation?
The baby’s name, the parents’ and grandparents’ names, the date, the puja and meal times, and the venue.
When is the namkaran held?
Traditionally on the eleventh or twelfth day after birth, and in many families the twenty-first. The date is often set against the birth star, and many families hold it later so relatives can travel.
Should the invitation include the baby’s photograph?
Entirely optional. Many families deliberately leave it off a widely forwarded card and share photographs privately instead.
