Wedding invitation wording

Formal, warm and short — with a note on what each line is actually doing.

An Indian wedding invitation is a fixed form with a few movable parts. The opening invokes a deity or a blessing; the host line names the elders doing the inviting; the couple appear with their parents’ names beneath; the functions follow in order; and a closing line asks for blessings. Once you know what each line is for, writing one is mostly a matter of choosing a register and keeping it.

The most common mistake is dropping the parents’ lines to save space. Guests read those lines as the signal of whose family is hosting, and leaving them out reads as an oversight rather than as brevity.

Getting it right

  • Name the hosts before the couple. The host line is how an invitation says whose family is welcoming you.
  • Keep the parents’ lines. "D/o" and "S/o" lines are read carefully and their absence is noticed.
  • Give each function its own date, time and venue. A single date for a five-day wedding creates work for you later.
  • Put the RSVP on a sibling or cousin, not the couple. Nobody wants to field logistics in their own wedding week.
  • Write the venue as a driver would need it — full name, area, city.

Questions

What should a wedding invitation say?
A blessing or invocation, the host line naming the elders inviting, the couple’s names with their parents’ names beneath, each function with its date, time and venue, the muhurat if the family observes one, an RSVP contact, and a closing line asking for blessings.
How do you write wedding invitation wording in Hindi?
The structure is the same as in English: the hosts first ("श्री ... एवं श्रीमती ... सादर निवेदन करते हैं"), the couple with their parents named, then the date, venue and a closing invitation to the family ("आप सपरिवार सादर आमंत्रित हैं"). A sample is above.
Whose names go first on a wedding invitation?
Conventionally the hosting family’s, which is most often the bride’s. Where both families host jointly, "Together with their families" opens the card and neither surname takes precedence.
